Microlaryngoscopy
What is it?
This is an endoscopic examination of the throat (Larynx and pharynx). It is done for the purpose of diagnoses and treatment for throat disorders
How is it carried out?
This is done in an operating theatre under a general anaesthesia. Whilst patient is lying down flat on an operating table an instrument call laryngoscope (about 1cm wide and 20cm long) is introduced through the mouth and the entire throat and sometimes the gullet is examined. Any disease might be removed or biopsied (sample for histology) during this time
Is it painful?
It is not a painful procedure. Sometimes paracetamol or ibuprofen might be require in the first 24 hours after the procedure
How long does it take?
The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes
Does it need anesthesia?
Yes, you will be put to sleep for the entire period of the procedure
Is there any complications?
Complications are rare. You may have temporary sore throat or a slight bruise on your lips, which will heal completely. Rarely tooth injury or a cut in the throat may occur and these are all treatable.
