What is Thyroplasty
Vocal cord paralysis may be due to cancer of the lung or neck, infection, stroke, neck injury, neck operation, example as a complication of a thyroid surgery. This is an operation to insert an implant to correct a paralysed vocal cord.

Who is it for?
This operation is performed on people who have loss their voice due to a paralysed vocal cord.
How is Thyroplasty performed?
It is usually performed in an operating theatre under a local anaesthesia but sometimes a general anaesthesia or additional sedation might be necessary. It involves a small cut approximately 5cm on the side of the neck to insert a silicon implant into the vocal cord to support the paralysed vocal cord. The operation usually takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
The recovery time is usually quick and you should be able to go home within 24 hours of the operation. You will be advice to rest your voice for only 3 days.

Are there any complications?
There are potential complications with any surgical procedure. Serious complications from this procedure are rare. There may be small risk of infection, bleeding or revision surgery and rarely breathing problems.
